Secondary mineral content

When strength is a non-negotiable, this is the test you need.

Secondary mineral content (SMC) testing is a specialised form of petrographic testing used to identify and quantify secondary minerals or soft, weak or non-durable minerals in rock-based products. Even small percentages of minerals that fall under these categories can become a problem in the field.

We commonly assess secondary minerals in accordance with AS1141.26 for basic igneous rocks and slightly modified AS1141.26 for acidic and intermediate rocks, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks to determine the soft, weak and deleterious minerals.

What we test

We provide petrographic testing of aggregates, sands, and rocks used in:
We also support infrastructure investigations for dams, bridges, roads, and tunnels, including wear and quartz content assessments for tunnelling projects.

The Scope Geo advantage

We know rocks and we know risk

Led by geologists with over 20 years of combined experience, our insights are practical and grounded in real industry conditions.

Responsive and reliable

We deliver concise results, clear recommendations, direct communication, and meet every deadline.

Above-standard is our standard

Our 200-point count analyses and advanced microscopy techniques give you more detail, more confidence, and better outcomes.

A rare specimen

We’re the only Australian East Coast-based independent business offering this level of petrographic specialisation, and we intend to keep raising the bar.
