Secondary mineral content
When strength is a non-negotiable, this is the test you need.
Secondary mineral content (SMC) testing is a specialised form of petrographic testing used to identify and quantify secondary minerals or soft, weak or non-durable minerals in rock-based products. Even small percentages of minerals that fall under these categories can become a problem in the field.
We commonly assess secondary minerals in accordance with AS1141.26 for basic igneous rocks and slightly modified AS1141.26 for acidic and intermediate rocks, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks to determine the soft, weak and deleterious minerals.

What we test
- Concrete, pavement materials and asphalt
- Rail ballast and rip rap
- Marine armour rock and dimension stone
- Filter and drainage materials
- Bedding and frack sands
- Building materials such as bricks and pavers
